Oroville
Born in the spring of 2011, Oroville was most likely injured on his first flight out of the nest. His left wing is immobile from the “elbow” down and he is missing some tail feathers. On warmer days, Oroville can be found underneath his fan cooling off. Sparred Owls
are a hybrid between the Spotted Owl and the Barred Owl. The Spotted Owl
population was already declining due to logging of the old growth forests in
which the Spotted Owl inhabit. The Barred Owl, an invasive species, then came
into the Spotted Owl territory and began mating with them creating the Sparred
Owl. More and more research is being
done on the Sparred Owl since it is a fairly new species and there is little
known about it.
